Evolution of Geotechnical Engineering
It’s said that Geotechnical Engineering came into existence long back some where in 17th century. During that time piling work was done with the help of pile boring machine which looks like this.

The machine was manually operated during that time and was in use during 17 and 18th century.
Technically word Geotechnical Engineering came into existence in 19th century when Mr Karl Terzaghi (1883-1963) who is known as the father of Geotechnical Engineering had forced the world to think about soil and its behavior. He came up with entirely new concept of soil mechanism about which no body had thought before. Karl Terzaghi's was first man who had considered soil as spring mass system and had formulated effective stress principle and further he gave many theories on settlement analysis, soil parameters, its strength and permeability.
Later On, after his innovative ideas and many of his theories various other theories had erupted which had given new terminologies to civil engineering subject.
